Exploring the Skies: A STEAM Workshop on Understanding Clouds and the Weather They Bring

Clouds are fascinating natural phenomena that have intrigued humans for centuries. They are visible masses of water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the Earth's atmosphere. Clouds play a significant role in determining our weather patterns, and it is crucial to understand the different types of clouds and the weather they bring. At a recent STEAM workshop, we explored the world of clouds and their impact on our daily lives.

The workshop primarily focused on three types of clouds: cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. We began by discussing the different characteristics of each type and how they form. Cumulus clouds are large, white, and puffy, resembling cotton balls. Stratus clouds, on the other hand, are flat and featureless, and they often cover the entire sky. Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds that resemble feathers.

We then moved on to the three different activities that helped us understand the science behind clouds and their formation. The first activity was the water cycle in a bag. We filled a clear plastic bag with water, closed it tightly, and placed it in the sun. As the water warmed up, it evaporated, and we observed the water droplets forming on the inside of the bag. This activity helped us understand the water cycle and how it contributes to cloud formation.

The second activity was the cloud in a jar. We filled a glass jar with warm water and added a few drops of food coloring. We then placed a bag of ice on the jar. After about ten seconds, we removed the ice and sprayed hairspray into the jar and watched as it clung to the water vapor making the cloud more visible. This activity helped us understand the process of condensation and how it forms clouds.

The third and final activity was the rain cloud in a jar. We added water to clear cups and then placed shaving cream on top. Using pipettes, we added water with food coloring to the shaving cream cloud. When the cloud became to heavy, it rained. This activity helped us understand why rain comes from certain clouds.

Overall, the STEAM workshop was an excellent learning experience, helping us understand the science behind clouds and the weather they bring. We learned about the different types of clouds, their characteristics, and how they form. The three different activities helped us understand the water cycle, condensation, and precipitation, and how they contribute to cloud formation and weather patterns. By understanding the science behind clouds, we can better appreciate and anticipate the weather changes around us.
