Mammals Unit – 12-Week Course
In this 12-week unit, students will meet once a week on either Tuesday or Thursday in similarly aged peer groups. Together, we'll dive into the fascinating world of mammals, exploring everything from live birth to classification and survival adaptations.
Students will be introduced to a wide range of mammal groups, including ungulates, elephants, primates, felines, canines, monotremes, marsupials, bats, rodents, bears, and endangered species. We'll also take a special look at Alaskan mammals and their unique traits.
Throughout the unit, students will learn about:
The characteristics that define mammals
How mammals are classified
The difference between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores
Food chains and ecosystems
How mammals give live birth
Hands-on activities will bring the learning to life! Students might simulate milking a cow, explore various mammal tracks, and engage in other interactive experiences that help them better understand mammal behavior and biology.
This 12-week unit is packed with fun and discovery—from the tallest giraffe to the tiniest bumblebee bat. Learn how nocturnal mammals use echolocation to "see" in the dark, how wolves track prey with their powerful sense of smell, and how hooved mammals survive in predator-filled habitats.
