The Cookie Jar Mystery: A Study in Forensic Science

Course Overview:
Who broke the cookie jar? Who took the cookies? In The Cookie Jar Mystery, students in grades 4-6 will become forensic investigators, using real-world science to solve a classroom crime! This engaging, hands-on course introduces students to forensic science fundamentals through lab analysis, fieldwork, and critical thinking.

The Mystery:
A crime has occurred in Mrs. Randall’s classroom—her favorite cookie jar has been broken, and some of her homemade cookies are missing! While not the most serious crime, it’s the perfect opportunity to put forensic science to the test. With the help of a chief crime scene investigator, students will take on the role of forensic experts, analyzing clues and piecing together the evidence to find out what really happened.

What Students Will Do:

  • Analyze Evidence – Examine fingerprints, hair samples, fiber evidence, and bite marks.

  • Conduct Scientific Tests – Perform ink chromatography, analyze substances, and study toxicology.

  • Investigate Suspects – Learn how to question witnesses, assess motives, and track alibis.

  • Explore Forensic Techniques – Study blood types, DNA, and pollen analysis to build a case.

  • Think Like Scientists – Develop observation skills, conduct lab work, and interpret data.

Why Enroll?
Aligned with national science and critical thinking standards, The Cookie Jar Mystery fosters confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Students will leave with a deeper understanding of forensic science and the real-world applications of investigative work—all while having fun solving a deliciously intriguing case!

Standards Alignment:
This course is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards in mathematics, English language arts, and literacy. It fosters critical thinking, confidence, and scientific literacy through engaging, real-world applications.
